Find out how we're making homes more energy efficient, preparing for climate change and reducing our environmental impact, as well as the support available to you.

How we're making homes and communities more sustainable

Sustainability is about making homes warmer, more energy efficient and resilient to climate change, while creating greener neighbourhoods and reducing our environmental impact.

We're working towards becoming a net zero carbon organisation by 2050.

Making homes warmer and more energy efficient

We want you to live in a home that is comfortable, affordable to run and fit for the future.

  • Improving existing homes

Many of our homes were built before modern energy efficiency standards were introduced.

Through our Major Works Investment Programme and government-funded schemes, we're making improvements that can include:

    • insulation
    • new windows and doors
    • improved heating systems
    • better ventilation

These improvements can help homes stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer, while using less energy.

We're working to improve the energy performance of our homes and increase the number of homes with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C or above.

If your home is identified for energy efficiency improvements, we'll contact you directly. We'll explain what work is planned and what it means for you.

  • Your home's energy rating

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) shows how energy efficient your home is. It gives the property a rating from A, the most efficient, to G, the least efficient.

You can use the government's online service to check whether your home has a current EPC and see its rating.

    Check your home's EPC rating

  • Building more energy-efficient new homes

We design our new homes to meet high energy efficiency standards and use less energy.

If you move into a new home, we'll give you information about its heating and other systems so you can use them effectively.

Some new homes are connected to heat networks.

If your home is connected to a heat network owned and operated by L&Q, you can find information about your heating and support available on our L&Q Energy page.

  • Installing your own energy or cooling technology

We understand that as the effects of climate change become more noticeable and new technologies become more widely available, you may want to install products, like:

    • solar panels
    • air conditioning
    • your own electric vehicle charging point

You must contact us before installing anything that could affect your home or building. You may need our permission before work can go ahead.

This helps us make sure the installation is safe, meets legal and technical requirements and is allowed under your tenancy or lease.

Technology, regulations and government policy can change. Always check our latest requirements before buying equipment or arranging installation.

Preparing homes for climate change

Climate change is already affecting homes and communities across the UK.

We're assessing how our homes could be affected by risks, including:

  • flooding
  • overheating during hotter weather
  • ground movement and subsidence
  • extreme weather

This work helps us identify where homes and communities may be more vulnerable and where action may be needed.

Creating healthy, green places

Green spaces and nature are an important part of healthy neighbourhoods.

We're looking at ways to:

  • create more spaces for plants and wildlife on our estates
  • make our neighbourhoods more environmentally friendly, including by reducing waste
  • support wildlife and nature recovery when we build new homes
  • help communities to cope better with climate change

We'll let you know when projects or improvements are planned that affect your neighbourhood.

Electric vehicle charging

Some of our estates and developments have electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

We're continuing to look at how we can provide EV charging across our homes and communities.

If there are no charging points where you live, you can use Zapmap to find public charging points nearby.

Find EV charging points near you on Zapmap

Contact us before installing any EV charging equipment at your home. We'll let you know whether you need our permission before carrying out any work.

Help with energy costs

We know that energy bills and the cost of heating your home can be a concern.

If you're struggling to pay your energy bills, contact your energy supplier as soon as possible.

We may also be able to help you with:

  • energy advice
  • help with budgeting and managing your money
  • debt advice
  • help with benefits and applications
  • access to grants and other support schemes

You can also get independent information and support from:

  • Citizens Advice – free advice about money and other problems
  • National Energy Action – advice and support with fuel poverty and keeping your home warm
  • Energy Saving Trust – advice about saving energy and reducing your energy bills
  • your local council - which may provide local energy or financial support

Working towards net zero

We're committed to reducing our impact on the environment by becoming a net zero carbon organisation by 2050.

Our priorities include:

  • Warm and comfortable homes – helping residents live in homes that are easier and more affordable to heat
  • Reducing carbon emissions – cutting emissions from our homes, buildings and day-to-day operations as we work towards net zero
  • Using resources more efficiently – reducing waste and making better use of materials when we build and maintain homes
  • Creating healthy, green places – improving biodiversity and supporting greener neighbourhoods
  • Preparing for climate change – making our homes and communities more resilient to future weather and environmental challenges

How we measure and report our progress

We measure our environmental performance so we can understand where we're making progress and where more work is needed.

We report on:

  • energy efficiency improvements
  • the energy performance of our homes
  • carbon emissions
  • climate-change risks
  • our wider environmental performance
  • future priorities and targets

Our annual sustainability report provides more detail about our progress in these areas.

It uses the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing to help us measure and report our performance consistently.

Measures we track include:

  • the number of homes with an EPC rating of C or above
  • the average energy efficiency of our homes
  • carbon emissions
  • biodiversity improvements
  • the environmental performance of our construction and maintenance work
