Supporting young people to get the best start in life

Our L&Q Foundation are proud to be working with young people in our communities through The Stem & Learn Programme. Working in partnership with Tutors United, we hire university students to deliver English and Maths tuition to primary school pupils. These young people are between 8-11 years old and are from disadvantaged or low-income households in our neighbourhoods.

Ezekiel joined the programme in January 2023, while in Year 6. He was hoping to get some extra support ahead of starting secondary school in September. Attending lessons at the Lewington Centre, Ezekiel told us, "I enjoy the weekly face-to-face classes and also the learning and help with revising."

His tutor, Mariam, describes him as a student who works quickly and independently through tasks, showing a good understanding of both Maths and English and as someone always contributing to class discussions.

Ezekiel's hard work and support from his tutor meant he went from scoring 42% in his initial Maths assessment to an incredible 88% in his midpoint assessment. Ezekiel's mum was delighted with the progress he was making with the support of the programme.

"Tutors United has helped Ezekiel improve in his learning by making more progress in his assessments,” she said. “He’s confident answering questions and solving equations especially in Maths. The support L&Q are providing for my son has really helped him tremendously in his SATs. He was very confident sitting his exams and has continuously shown great improvements in both Maths and English."

The programme also supports the hired university students by increasing their employability skills to help them enter into a career of their choice within four months of graduating.

Between November 2022 and July 2023, we hired and trained a total of 15 students as tutors and reached 96 pupils and families, 72 of whom are L&Q residents.

The programme has been delivered face-to-face in community centres in Barking, Newham and Southwark as well as online targeting pupils in Greenwich, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest.
