Working in partnership with Wates to help Londoners

Through our Major Works Investment Programme, we’re investing in the quality, safety and environmental efficiency of the homes we manage.

In addition to improving residents’ homes, the programme is having a positive impact thanks to the social value provided by our supply chain partners.

Wates, one of our Major Works contractors, is focusing its efforts where they are needed most by implementing projects that tackle some of the challenges faced by people in the capital.

At Baker Beall Court sheltered housing scheme in Bexleyheath, Wates is helping residents over 55 into digital inclusion.

The team has been running sessions for the residents, many of whom had no experience using digital platforms or tools and have embraced the opportunity to learn more.

Matt Corbett, Director of the L&Q Foundation, which brings together L&Q’s social and economic programmes and oversees the social value created by our supply chain, said:

“These digital inclusion sessions have enabled older residents, who sometimes feel lonely and isolated, to connect with loved ones.

"Residents have told us that they’ve enjoyed the experience and are now in contact with relatives abroad, having learned how to use Facetime, video call and other tools with the support of Wates’ staff.”

Elsewhere in the borough, Wates Living Space – part of the Wates Group – has donated £1,500 to Bexley Winter Shelter and St John Vianney Church, both of which help rough sleepers and homeless people.

Matt Corbett said:

“This donation will provide essential sleeping bags, basic provisions and support services to those in need.

"Sleeping bags can provide a sense of security, reducing the likelihood of physical harm or theft while sleeping.

"They also help shield rough sleepers from the elements, reducing the risk of hypothermia, frostbite and other weather-related health issues.”

The Winter Shelter and church also work with Streetlink homeless vans in the evening, offering food, clothing, medical assistance and accessibility to local emergency shelters.

Wates Family Enterprise has also donated £5,000 to Carney Community Boxing Club which operates in Battersea, Wandsworth.

This will enable the club to buy additional boxing equipment to help users learn boxing, fitness and health, self-defence, discipline, mental focus and other skills.

Carney supports the physical and emotional wellbeing of young people in the local area, some of whom had unfortunately succumbed to knife crime.

Matt said:

“The generous donation from the Wates Family Enterprise will be put to good use.

"It will encourage young people to participate in sports and benefit from mentoring to help build their confidence and self-esteem.

"We’re grateful to Wates Family Enterprise for their support.”

Dovile Catterick, Social Value Manager at Wates, said:

“Empowering communities through our social value initiatives is not just about giving back—it's about creating lasting connections, fostering resilience, and building a future where communities can thrive.

"Wates is delighted to have supported these amazing charities and work with L&Q and supply chain partners such as BDG Contacts Limited and Wates Family Enterprise Trust to fund some of these projects.

"We look forward to continuing this lasting legacy throughout this contract with L&Q.”
