Stay safe using fireworks
HOMELIFE
October 2023
The safest place to enjoy fireworks is at a large public displays.
If you prefer a firework party at home, you can still make the occasion fun and safe for everyone by following these safety tips:
- Plan your firework party by checking the time you can legally set off fireworks
- Only buy fireworks which carry the CE or UKCA safety standard marks
- Keep your fireworks in a closed, non-flammable box and use them one at a time
- Follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary
- Light the firework at arm's length with a taper ensuring both you and spectators stand well back
- Always direct fireworks away from spectators
- Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks
- Never return to a firework once it has been lit
- Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them
- Keep pets indoors when using fireworks
Sparkler safety
Sparklers are often viewed as being harmless, but they burn at very hot temperatures - equivalent to a welding torch!
Follow these top tips for sparkler safety:
- Don’t give sparklets to children under-5
- Always supervise children with fireworks
- Make sure children handling sparklers wear gloves
- Hold sparklers at arm’s length whilst being lit and light them one at a time
- Don’t wave sparklers about close to other people
- Have a bucket of water or sand nearby and place burnt sparklers in this as they stay hot for some time
Bonfire safety
Bonfires can easily get out of control. Always consider whether having a bonfire this year is a risk worth taking and follow these rules if you do have one:
- Bonfires are not permitted in communal spaces
- If you’re having a bonfire in a private garden, choose a site away from wooden fences, sheds and places where children play
- Make sure at least one person is responsible for bonfire safety
- Never use petrol or paraffin on a bonfire - fire lighters are a safe alternative
- Keep buckets of water to hand in case the fire gets out of control
- Make sure spectators stand well back from the fire
- Spectators should avoid loose clothing and tie back long hair near the fire
- After the party, pour water on the fire, rather than leaving it to burn out
- Make sure that the bonfire is out, and the surroundings are made safe before leaving the area.
