‘Jobs for the boys?’ - not for the next generation at school careers fair

Our partnership with Equans UK & Ireland is helping attract the next generation into the construction industry by showing it's not just about 'jobs for the boys'

Karen Field, Social Value Manager at Equans UK & Ireland, attended a careers fair at Bentley Wood High School for Girls, in Stanmore, as part of the organisations’ social value commitments to L&Q.

Around 1,400 students attended and there were a variety of employers from many different industries in attendance.

Karen said:

“It was a busy event, and it was great to talk to so many students, highlighting different career opportunities within the construction industry.

Some were already interested in a career in the construction industry and wanted more information, and others weren’t sure of what career path to take and were interested in finding out about the wide variety of roles the industry offers, including ‘green jobs’ to help achieve carbon reduction goals.”

A spokesperson for Bentley Wood High School said: “Thank you for your time and helping to make the day such a success."

Mark Newstead, Director of Major Works at L&Q, said:

“One of our core values at L&Q is Inclusion, and as we serve a diverse array of residents from all walks of life, we also want to see that reflected in our workforce too.

Here at L&Q we are always looking at ways to encourage young people into the repairs and construction industry.

No matter who you are, or what your background, a trade-based career offers an opportunity to build practical skills for life and to make a difference. It’s fantastic to see our partners playing their part in bringing in the next generation."

Equans UK & Ireland is one of ten partners working with us on our Major Works Investment Programme. This will see us invest around £3bn over 15 years to improve the safety, comfort, and environmental performance of residents’ homes.

Beyond improving homes, the partnership includes social value commitments to create a lasting impact in the communities where we operate.
