A new free community arts programme offering creative workshops, technical training and arts sessions for residents has launched at Brixton House.

Supported by £10,000 in funding from L&Q’s community grants programme - part of a wider £16,742 investment – the programme aims to give young people a solid foundation for exploring careers in the creative industry.

Group of Brixton House residents of different ages sat around a table crafting. All focused at the task, that are using craft paper, string, cardboard, paper and other craft materials.

It is particularly focused on those who may not otherwise have access to such opportunities, while celebrating the stories, memories and experiences of Brixton’s local community.

Expert facilitators, art practitioners, associate companies and show producers – many of whom come from Lambeth and backgrounds similar to the local community – will lead a series of hands-on workshops, training sessions and creative activities.

Young person with purple top sat drawing alongside an adult in a beige cardigan, both focused at on the task.

Participants will learn from industry experts and use professional media studios as part of the scheme. They will also explore a range of disciplines, including music production, podcasting, poetry, arts and crafts and digital media. All sessions are free to access.

The programme kicked off last month with a fun-filled afternoon of arts and crafts, dancing, drumming and costume design activities for children and families. The event was well attended by members of the local community, including L&Q residents.

Adult in green jacket and yellow beanie hat sat smiling at the camera next to young person smiling at the camera and holding a piece of cardboard up. The cardboard has a drawing of fire on it with the letter 'F.'F.F' above the drawing.

Young person with a lot of joy on their face, sat interacting with craft material around them. next to them is an adult smiling at them and holding a red thin ribbon in their hand.

Aisha Chaudhry, Community Development Lead at L&Q said:

“Brixton is a place where diversity, creativity, and innovation thrive. As a social landlord invested in our communities, our grants support local groups to deliver activities that widen participation in the arts.

The creative industries are built on contacts and collaboration, which can make them difficult to access. The real-world cost is the lost potential of untold stories and unfulfilled careers.

This programme gives budding creatives the chance to make connections, hone their skills and develop their voice in a supportive environment.”
