The next station is… Barking Riverside
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan joined transport bosses, local politicians, and partners from the Barking Riverside team for the official opening of the newest Overground station at Barking Riverside.
The new station represents the first extension on the Overground line since 2015 and it will considerably cut people’s journeys into central London.
Evidently impressed with the proceedings, Sadiq Khan called the station a ‘game changer’ for residents and East London in general and said the development was ‘very exciting’.
“This extension is a real game changer because you've got now not just the connection from Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside, the London Overground, that enables people here to get to the Tube, to the Elizabeth line, to the c2c - that is really important.”
This was made possible through a significant investment from L&Q, which demonstrates our commitment to being long-term stewards of the area and bringing forward a thriving new community.
Barking Riverside is our joint venture partnership with the Mayor of London. One of the largest and most ambitious regeneration projects in Europe, the 15-year development programme will deliver over 10,000 homes, new infrastructure, commercial and leisure facilities, and new schools on the site of the former Barking Power Station.
After unveiling a commemorative plaque in the station, the Mayor stopped to take pictures with station staff, learn more about the development and construction progress from L&Q and Barking Riverside Limited leadership team and meet some apprentices who had been actively involved with delivering the station ahead of schedule.
Also present at the opening, Jacqui Esimaje-Heath, L&Q’s Director for Development Growth, said:
“Barking Riverside is one of the most ambitious and significant regeneration schemes in the UK. L&Q is proud to be investing alongside our partner the Mayor of London to bring forward vital transport infrastructure, alongside the planned facilities and homes.
“The new Overground Station will support not just residents but the whole Borough and wider East London community. This is a testament to L&Q’s commitment to being a long-term partner for the entire area.”
