“It’s incredibly rewarding to see how these projects are transforming lives on the Haggerston Estate. By addressing the real needs of our communities—whether through improving mental health, fostering social connections, or providing essential support—we’re building a stronger, more resilient community. This is how we make a lasting impact,” said Andrea Isip, Community Development Lead at L&Q.
“Through the Haggerston Estate Community Fund, the estate is not just a place to live—it’s a thriving, supportive community where residents are empowered, connected, and inspired. The projects funded last year led to some great outcomes, and we’re excited for 2024 to be another year of growth, resilience, and meaningful change for the people who call Haggerston home,” said Matt Corbett, Director of L&Q Foundation.
The new projects will begin in October.
Highlights of 2023 Projects
In 2023, the Haggerston Estate Community Fund sparked a wave of positive change across the estate, with £36,000 allocated to support local initiatives.
Split between the CVS Fund (£30,000 for voluntary groups) and the Micro Grants Fund (£6,000 for resident-led activities), the funding made a huge impact in Hackney, with four key projects improving wellbeing, mental health, and social connections for residents.
Hoxton Health delivered chair-based exercise classes, complementary therapies, and taster sessions that got older residents moving and feeling revitalised.
Hackney Playbus provided engaging play sessions for babies, pre-schoolers, and their parents and carers, turning playtime into a lifeline for families.
Sev Necati Training offered self-defence and empowerment courses for women and girls, boosting confidence and personal safety.
Valued Green CIC delivered essential food and sanitary parcels to residents in need, easing daily struggles.
362 residents benefitted directly from the funded activities.
155 sessions delivered practical, life-enhancing support.
171 hours of community-focused engagement.
An evaluation of 80 residents highlighted the powerful impact of these projects:
- 77% of participants reported stronger social networks
- 97% experienced improved mental health and wellbeing.
One resident, who regularly attended the chair-based exercise sessions, shared: “It's all been wonderful. Thank you to everyone, especially J [the exercise tutor] - it has transformed my life.”
