New free school uniform scheme for Old Trafford

Pupils in Old Trafford are set to benefit from a new school uniform initiative from local charity Bridging the Gap.

Thanks to a £5,000 grant from L&Q Foundation, the new uniform scheme means parents and carers in the borough can get a referral from their child’s school for access to new school uniform items as well as pre-loved/second-hand clothes.

Referrals can also be made by housing associations and community groups, and parents can contact a referral specialist by email.

Helena Canavan, Project Manager at Bridging the Gap (Manchester), said:

“1 in 10 children (11.4%) in Old Trafford are living in poverty, and with the cost of school uniforms often prohibitively high, this significantly impacts many local families.

We are so grateful to L&Q for this funding which will allow us to provide essential uniform items to ensure all local children are able to attend school in the correct uniform.”

Matt Corbett, Director of the L&Q Foundation, said:

“The cost of living crisis continues to affect many families, and we have an important part to play in supporting not only our own residents, but also the wider community.

Social value initiatives such as this scheme will mean that many families can now access school uniforms who otherwise may have been unable to afford them.”
