L&Q's Foundation Awareness Month
This month we’re celebrating the L&Q Foundation and the work it does to improve people’s chances in life and create opportunities in our communities. L&Q is driven by a social purpose which has always gone beyond just building homes and the Foundation is central to this by developing and funding social interventions.
Here are just some of the great examples of how the Foundation is making a huge difference to people’s lives.
Reclaim the Lane is a fantastic initiative which takes reusable furniture and white goods free of charge in Newham. A mini show room has been installed in L&Q’s head office with Reclaim the Lane furniture. The display has been a great success with three pieces of furniture already being sold, raising one hundred and eighty-five pounds. The proceeds are going to the social enterprise Bright Sparks which is currently managing Reclaim the Lane.
The Foundation are also involved in a new project Quality Street, teaming up with George Mitchell Primary School. Over the next two years, three generations of residents in Leyton will come together to produce new creations through celebrations, street festivals and art projects. Helen Williams, Senior Deputy Head and Head of Primary at George Mitchell Primary School said:
“We, as a school, feel very privileged to have been chosen to be part of this intergenerational project over the next two years. It is so important for our children to value older people in our community and to learn from them but also have a unique opportunity to work closely with them together for a goal they will all be part of and enjoy.”
The success stories do not stop there. In April 2019, the Foundation helped keep one resident in their home against all odds. The resident was nearly £10,000 in arrears, had been awarded a suspended possession order on the terms of paying a £1,400 payment and current rent plus £100 pcm. He will be able to do this as he had started a new job as a delivery driver for Argos. The Foundation have now signposted him towards future job opportunities.
L&Q’s mission is to create homes and neighbourhoods that we can be proud of and the Foundation will help achieve this. No one should be denied the opportunity to achieve their potential because of where they live.
