Resident turns passion for crafts into jewellery business
A resident has taken her love of crafts to the next level by launching a handmade jewellery business.
Eleven-year-old Suraiya Gordon started her bracelet-making venture. S.A.N, with two friends, Amira and Nevaeh.
The trio, who all live on the Angell Town Estate in Brixton, have quickly gained local attention for their colourful, custom-made creations.
Suraiya began making bracelets when she was nine as a way to relax.
After being invited to run a stall at the Big Lunch event in 2024, she and her friends realised they could turn the pastime into a source of pocket money – and ramped up production.
The young entrepreneur’s growing business has benefited from the strength of her close-knit community. Walk-arounds on the estate, word of mouth and support from local community service providers including L&Q have all helped increase sales.
The girls took their business to new heights at this year’s Big Lunch organised by Lambeth Council and Angell Delight. Held on Sunday June 22 on Angell Town Estate, they sold over £100 worth of items in a single morning.
Jasmine and Suraiya have lived on the Angell Town Estate in Brixton since 2017.
Aisha Chaudhry, Community Development Lead at L&Q said:
‘For many, making a friendship bracelet is a simple, nostalgic pastime, or a way to spend an afternoon with friends. But Suraiya’s turned that tradition into something truly special. Her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit are inspiring, and it’s been heartwarming to see the community rally around her. We wish her every success with this venture.’
The bracelets are made out of clay and pearl beads and sell for £2.50 each. Charms can be added for an extra 50p and deals are available for multiple purchases.
All designs are created by Suraiya, Amira and Nevaeh, with custom orders welcome.
Customers can request specific designs, including national flag colours. Suraiya has already made bracelets representing Jamaica, Brazil, Nigeria, Barbados, Germany and Greece.
Her creative talents extend beyond jewellery. Suraiya is also passionate about photography, film and editing.
She attends Sparks Film Club on weekends, takes part in productions, and hopes to work in film editorial in the future.
Jasmine, Suraiya’s mum, said:
‘I’m really proud of Suraiya and the girls. It’s amazing to see them work so well as a team. It’s also lovely to see the community come together to support them.
It shows how much local talent and togetherness there is here in Angell Town. We’re really grateful for the support.’
