New social housing for Burnham families

Published on 24/06/2024

Seven Burnham families are settling into their new homes after we converted empty garages into much-needed social housing.

Works were completed in March 2024, with residents moving in earlier this spring.

Part of our stock portfolio strategy, we are constantly seeking innovative methods of building and funding the delivery of new, much needed, affordable homes in its key areas for growth. The new social rent homes in Burnham were previously empty garages and underused land. They have been converted into spacious 3-bedroom family homes, addressing the local shortage of large, affordable family housing.

This project comes at a crucial time, as the demand for larger family accommodations in Burnham has intensified, with over 1,000 families on the waiting list for a three-bedroom home  in South Buckinghamshire. In response to this demand, we collaborated with the local authority to ensure these homes were allocated to both existing L&Q residents and those on the local housing waiting list, previously living in temporary accommodation.

Jon Fish, Stock Portfolio Director at L&Q, commented

"At L&Q we’ve always remained committed to playing our part in tackling the housing and temporary accommodation crises.

“As we reflect on this successful completion, our focus remains on identifying and transforming more underutilised spaces into quality homes. This approach not only addresses the pressing need for housing but also contributes positively to the needs of the Burnham community."

Each home is equipped with modern amenities such as air source heat pumps and electric car charging points, reinforcing L&Q’s commitment to sustainable living. This project also benefited from the support of a grant from Homes England, highlighting the importance of partnerships in addressing community housing needs.

The planning and creation of this redevelopment involved key partners including MEPK for securing planning permissions, Life Build Solutions Ltd as the contractor, and Airey Miller as the employer’s agents.
