Students from colleges across London gained some hands-on experience in the construction industry as part of a work experience project with one of L&Q’s Major Works Investment Programme partners.

16 students visited the Regents Wharf construction site in King’s Cross, with staff from one of their partners, Wates. As part of the visit, they broadened their understanding of sustainability and safety within the construction industry.

During the visit, the students completed a CSCS mock test, marking a significant milestone in their construction industry knowledge.

The week-long program extended beyond the construction site, featuring visits to the iconic Houses of Parliament. The students actively participated in the Houses of the Future session, received valuable CV and interview tips, and finished the week with engaging presentations on sustainability in construction.

L&Q’s Major Works Investment Programme will see the organisation invest around £3bn over 15 years to improve the safety, comfort and environmental performance of residents’ homes

Dovile Catterick, Customer Services Manager at Wates, said:

"We are optimistic about witnessing many of these young individuals pursue successful careers in construction."

Reflecting on the experience, Makbule, a Year 13 student, said:

"We were lucky enough to visit one of the Wates sites currently working on a project that solely focuses on sustainability. In every aspect, Wates is striving to incorporate sustainability throughout the project.

“From solar panels to generating onsite electricity to 260+ available bicycle racks to further encourage people to cycle to work and to reduce their carbon footprint. Site visits are so beneficial as you can gain experience firsthand and an essence of what your workplace could be like. I had a wonderful time with the team, thank you."

Mark Newstead, Director of Major Programmes at L&Q, said:

"We are proud to support initiatives that provide students with hands-on experiences and insights into the construction industry. Partnering with Wates on this work experience program aligns with our commitment to nurturing future talent and promoting sustainable practices within the construction sector."
