#ItStartswithMen White Ribbon Day 2024

Published on 25/11/2024

This White Ribbon Day, part of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, we join a worldwide movement calling for an end to gender-based violence.

Our male executive members proudly wear the white ribbon in support of this year’s theme, It Starts with Men.

They stand united behind our campaign message: domestic abuse has no room in our homes and no place in our communities.

Over the next 16 days, we’ll highlight how we and our partners provide practical and emotional support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

This includes help with navigating the legal system, managing finances, and employment support, as well as offering counselling and therapy at our specialist schemes.

As part of this campaign, we’ll share a story about Beverley Lewis House – a groundbreaking refuge that provides dedicated support for domestic abuse survivors with learning disabilities.

This unique facility offers tailored support, including life skills training, therapy and holistic care, helping residents regain independence and confidence.

We will also promote our Domestic Abuse Champion Network; a group of passionate individuals trained to raise awareness and provide vital support to colleagues and residents.

We’ll also be showcasing the impact of our Westminster First Housing Project, which helps survivors move into safe, secure housing and begin their journey towards rebuilding their lives.

Domestic abuse is a housing issue:

  • It is the leading cause of homelessness among women
  • It often results in severe financial challenges and can lead to tenancy loss
  • Housing staff are often the first to hear about abuse, sometimes a year earlier than other services.

We are working to ensure our housing services provide a foundation of safety and support. Our trained teams, including a Domestic Abuse Specialist, safeguarding experts, and mental health practitioners, are here to support residents and colleagues every step of the way.

Domestic abuse affects people of all genders and backgrounds, but it disproportionately impacts women and girls.

Lara Brading, Domestic Abuse Specialist said:

“As a housing provider, we are committed to ensuring our female residents and colleagues feel safe in their homes. White Ribbon Day gives us the opportunity to encourage men and boys to take responsibility in ending violence against women and girls.

It’s also a key moment to raise awareness of the signs of abuse and resources available —because change starts with us all.”
