Fiona Gardens celebrates 80th anniversary of VE Day
More than 60 residents, along with members of the local community, gathered to mark VE Day at Fiona Gardens with a joyful celebration full of music and shared stories.
Our extra care scheme in Trafford was beautifully transformed for the occasion, adorned with red and blue bunting and a remarkable display of wartime memorabilia.
The setting stirred powerful memories for many, paying homage to the celebrations that took place on 8 May 1945, when the end of World War II was officially declared.

“Today brings back such vivid memories for me,” said resident Brian Shakeshifter. “It’s fascinating to read all the memorabilia that’s been put on show. I was just a child at the time, living in Chorlton, and I still remember running around my bedroom shouting, ‘The bombs are dropping!’”
A soloist from Golden Age Songbird performed a heartwarming set of wartime classics from the 1940s and 50s, closing with Vera Lynn’s iconic ‘We’ll Meet Again’.
Residents also enjoyed a delicious buffet, including homemade pasties, pork pies, quiche and a selection of hot and cold finger foods.

Scheme manager, Trevor Bygrave, reflected on the day:
“It’s been a fantastic turnout, we’ve had over 60 people here, including some lovely faces from the wider community. Many of our residents remember the end of the war, so it’s been incredibly special. There’s been a real party atmosphere, everyone came dressed for the occasion, and it’s been a wonderful way to remember and reflect.”
