Brotherton Court: Trafford council's new affordable housing development

Published on 11/02/2025

Trafford Council is delivering on its long-term commitment to provide more affordable and social housing in the borough.

We have completed work on a scheme to transform an empty and dilapidated block of flats in Sale Moor into new social rented apartments with support from the Council’s Trafford Affordable Housing Fund.

Previously known as Lindow Court, it has been re-named Brotherton Court in tribute to long-standing Trafford Councillor Cllr Barry Brotherton, who has served as a councillor for 50 years and was Council Leader in 1986.

The three-storey block, which had been rundown and vacant for many years, has been totally refurbished to create nine residential units for social rent – three two-bed apartments and six one-bed. The homes will go to residents via the Council’s Housing Options Service Trafford (HOST) team.

Cllr Brotherton, who represents Sale Central, officially opened the new flats alongside Council Leader, Cllr Tom Ross, Executive Member for Economy and regeneration, Cllr Liz Patel and L&Q’s Ben Townsend, New Business Director for the NW.

The homes underwent a full refurbishment including roofs, interiors and heating systems to reduce costs and help the environment.

The work was part funded by Trafford Council’s Affordable Housing Fund which gathers contributions from new developments across the borough and ploughs them into fresh affordable housing projects.

The new development supports a number of the Council’s Corporate priorities – a thriving economy and homes for all, providing the best start for children and young people and addressing the climate crisis.

Ben Townsend, New Business Director NW for L&Q, said:

“At L&Q we are proud of our partnership working with Trafford Council to bring the Brotherton Court building back into use.

The newly refurbished and reconfigured building provides nine energy efficient homes that are fit for purpose and will be available to those in need of affordable housing in the borough.”

Cllr Brotherton said:

“I am honoured to have opened this fabulous new social housing scheme and delighted that it has been named after me.

I am a huge supporter of social housing and this development is a great example of what can be done to get more people on the housing ladder.

“Thank you to everyone who has worked hard to make this development a reality.

We have transformed an empty and rundown building into a lovely social housing development for families and individuals. I am very proud of what we have achieved.”

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said:

“Trafford Council is committed to supporting the provision of more affordable housing in the borough and I am delighted to have attended the official opening of this latest development – Brotherton Court.

This is a superb scheme which will help local families and residents onto the housing ladder. I am delighted it has been named after Cllr Brotherton – one of our longest serving councillors.

“The housing crisis is getting worse and more and more people are struggling to keep a roof over their heads. We are delighted to be supporting our partners L&Q on this project.”
