A cohort of apprentices from L&Q’s Maintenance team has successfully transformed a rundown space in Sidcup into a brand-new meeting area.

The project, carried out by eight apprentices showcased the skill and talent within the housing association’s apprenticeship programme.

The apprentices took full responsibility for planning, project managing and delivering the refurbishment, on Waring Road, working to an agreed cost and schedule.

From the early planning stages through to completion, the apprentices were closely supported by supervisors, who managed the works and provided guidance throughout.

The new office space, which took three weeks to revamp, was officially opened by L&Q’s CEO, Fiona Fletcher-Smith, on January 30, and will be used for meetings.

A training area was also created as part of the project, to give apprentices the opportunity to practice their skills, and for operatives to learn other trades.

Joseph Fasogbon, one of the apprentices who worked on the project, said the experience had been both challenging and rewarding:

“We were instructed to turn the empty property into a usable workspace to host meetings, Toolbox Talks, training and to basically be able to use it as a hub that people from L&Q can use.

“The work has consisted of a lot of cleaning, painting, replacing a few of the locks and door handles, as well as liaising with other parts of the business about what is required.

“It’s been enjoyable. The other apprentices are great to work with, and we’ve worked well to make sure the project comes together nicely.

“There have been ups and downs but it’s the attitude you have and how you work with your colleagues that helps you overcome any obstacles.”

Ben Roachford said:

“Looking at what we started with and what we have now, it looks newer, it looks fresher, and I feel like we’ve done a good job. This is our first project together, so we’ve been learning skills like communication, and teamwork.

“I’ve learnt something new every day as an L&Q apprentice. I’m always learning, but a few months in, some of the jobs have become like second nature. My mentor trusts me and it’s good to know I’m making improvements.”

Fiona Fletcher-Smith praised the apprentices for their hard work and the quality of the finished space, she said:

“This is a wonderful project and a fantastic example of what our apprentices can achieve.

“The transformation of this space is impressive, and it highlights just how strong and valuable our apprenticeship programme is. I’m incredibly proud of the apprentices and the supervisors who supported them to deliver such a great result.”

Last year, L&Q’s apprentice intake doubled in size, with 18 new roles in plumbing, joinery, roofing and heating installation across Greater London and Greater Manchester.

These apprenticeships offer participants the chance to earn while they learn, combining paid hands-on experience with fully funded qualifications.

Apprentices receive expert-on-the-job training, structured development programmes, a competitive salary and access to a range of employee benefits, including a health cash plan and employee assistance programme.

Applications for apprentices to start later this year open in May.
