Additional homes for Quarry community as plans get go ahead

Almost 250 new homes will be added to 600 already being built on a disused 50‐acre quarry site in Erith after changes to the plans were given the green light.

Councillors voted unanimously to extend the project, which includes a large primary school, ecology park and commercial space, at a meeting of Bexley Council’s planning committee.

The scheme is being delivered by a partnership between Anderson, a leading contractor and property development company, and L&Q, one of the UK’s leading charitable housing associations and residential developers.

Sean Emmett, Group Partnerships Director at Anderson, said they were delighted to receive the backing for the extra 249 properties at The Quarry.

“This has involved more than 18 months of constructive and positive engagement with the London Borough of Bexley,” he said.

“Over that period, we have been working with residents, members and officers of the council to ensure that the revised master plan reflects the needs of the local area and ensures that we can successfully deliver new homes on a site which was previously considered too difficult to develop.

“It’s up to us now to deliver these new homes, the Limewood Free School and quality public realm for new and existing residents of Erith.”

The revised master plan will deliver 87 affordable homes in the first tranche of new homes to be delivered as part of the next phase of development.

Neil Davis, Regional Development Director, South Region, at L&Q said,“Members’ cross party support for our revised plans at the Quarry is fantastic news. These changes will see us deliver more affordable housing, including a significant number of larger homes suitable for families, which will make an important contribution to meeting local housing need.

“Working with our partners at Anderson, we have already made great progress on site - with an ecology area already delivered, and works well underway on the new primary school. We are looking forward to make these new plans a reality, with construction on future phases starting later in the spring.”

Councillor Nicola Taylor, who represents Erith ward, said at the meeting: “This application provides the 35% affordable housing that we require in our policies, and I’m really pleased to see that.

“It shows what developers can achieve when they work with our officers.

“I’m also really pleased to see two and three bedroom units because it does reflect the local need and the green corridor and the consideration to the green environment.”

Anderson and L&Q delivered an ecology area on site more than two years ago, adjacent to the proposed development, to mitigate its impact and ensure a safe environment for protected species found on site.
