Peckham fire - L&Q statement

Dec 16 2009

Update for residents affected by the fire:

Southwark residents affected by the fire in Peckham can contact Southwark Council for help and assistance. Information on the help available and contact details can be found on Southwark Council's website.

L&Q statement regarding the fire

L&Q staff have been working closely to assist Southwark Council with the rehousing of residents who have been displaced by the Peckham fire.

To date six families have found permanent homes within the Borough through L&Q. All the homes are furnished, have a kitchen starter pack and come with essential grocery items and bedding.

Our aim is to continue to work with the Council to ensure that residents are found permanent homes immediately and we have taken the additional step of pledging £10,000 to Southwark's fund for the affected families.

The developers of the site, Greenacre Homes, have been co-operating fully with the Health and Safety Executive who are now investigating the cause of the fire. The site was being used to build 39 homes in Peckham and has regular Health and Safety checks carried out by the contractor in compliance with the legislation.

The last of these checks was carried out on 18th November 2009. We continue to offer our help and support wherever we can to those who have been affected and will assist the statutory authorities with their investigations wherever we can.

David Montague, Chief Executive, L&Q
