Young people in South London get a head start with L&Q's ‘Kickstart Your Career’ scheme

L&Q, in conjunction with the Apollo Group and Widehorizons Outdoor Education Trust, funded the ‘Kickstart Your Career’ programme, which gave young people the opportunity to take part in training exercises and work experience in the construction industry.
The young people, from across Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley, Bromley and Southwark took part in the year-long programme which included courses in painting, decorating, plastering and carpentry, as well as fun team building exercises including paintballing and go-karting.
In September and October 2010, working alongside teams from construction companies Marjon and Apollo Group, the 16 to 22-year-olds had the opportunity to assist with a restoration project at the Widehorizons Ty’n y Berth centre in Wales.
Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said: "I'm very pleased the Kickstart apprentices from Lewisham have managed to get so much out of the scheme. They've gained experience in key skills for the workplace which, in these difficult economic times, will undoubtedly put them in a good position for future employment opportunities".
David Montague, Chief Executive of L&Q, said; “We are very proud of all the young people who took part in the scheme. It is a great project and we are delighted that it has so successfully provided an opportunity for many young people to gain access to fun training exercises and work experience in the construction industry. L&Q is committed to the local community and we will continue to support the young people after graduation whether with help and advice for securing apprenticeships or further training”.
