Training courses for residents

It is expected that the 2012 games will create many employment opportunities in Greenwich and Bexley so L&Q has funded ARC Training, Education & Community Services to run a range of free accredited vocational courses aimed primarily at L&Q residents in these boroughs.

The funding, made through L&Q's Ujima Foundation, will pay for 150 qualifications through 14 courses at the training centre in Grovebury Road, Abbey Wood.

Starting in September, there will be a 12-week word processing computer course. There will also be weekly courses in computer maintenance and textiles. Over the next year there will also ICT courses available on spreadsheets, databases, presentations and desktop publishing and vocational courses in customer care, health and safety at work, and food safety.

All the courses will be supplemented with advice on job search techniques, CV writing and interview skills.

The courses are aimed at absolute beginners and there will be enrollment days at the centre on Wednesday the 8th of September 2010 (10am to 1pm), Thursday the 9th September 2010 (1pm to 4pm) and Saturday the 11th September 2010 (11 am to 3 or 4pm).

Mary Rouse, Neighbourhood Investment Co-ordinator at L&Q, said: "We wanted to do something to make sure our residents have the necessary skills and qualifications to take advantage of any employment opportunities that arise from the 2012 Olympics."

"The training, combined with the development of skills such as assertiveness, confidence building, motivation and team working, will prepare our learners for this."
