Bumper turnout for Lewington Centre community day

More than 300 residents joined L&Q and Southwark MP Simon Hughes for a fun-packed community day at the new Lewington Centre in south east London.

Residents who visited the centre, on the Silwood Estate in Rotherhithe, were able to enjoy everything from rock climbing and circus skills to nail art and football coaching from Millwall Community Scheme.

The Lewington Centre opened its doors in August last year and currently provides a range of activities for local people. The open day, on Saturday April 4th, gave residents a chance to tour the centre and meet some of the service providers, as well as meeting L&Q staff to discuss what other services they would like to see offered there.

Patricia Okonkwo, the Lewington Centre Co-ordinator, said she was staggered by how many people turned out for the event.
She said: "We were anticipating about 150 people on the day, so to get double that was fantastic.
"The feedback we had was really positive and using the comments that residents left we are going to put together a programme of more social and learning events that meet the needs of the Silwood community."

The event was supported by the London Boroughs of Lewisham and Southwark, along with the Metropolitan Police and Higgins Construction.

For many the highlight of the day was the presentation of raffle prizes by Councillor Heidi Alexander (Evelyn Ward), Deputy Mayor of Lewisham, and Pam Lewington, a former Silwood resident, after whom the centre is named.
