An L&Q residents' association in Herne Hill, working with a local history society, has launched a book about its estate.

'Milkwood Estate: the story of a Lambeth Community' traces its history from the earliest records to the present day. It looks at the lives and work of the people who have lived there and at how the local community has developed over the years. It has over 100 illustrations and chapters on transport and street names as well as two horrifying nineteenth-century murderers.

Maude Estwick, L&Q resident and chair of Milkwood Resident Association, said: "When we commissioned the local history group to research and write a history of the estate, the idea was to produce a pamphlet. Three years on we have a book!"

Sharon Heslop, Neighbourhood Investment Officer at L&Q, attended the book launch. She said: "It's great to see that a community can come together and produce such a comprehensive publication that will appeal to present and future residents of the area."

Copies are available from Sharon Heslop at L&Q on 020 8875 5523 or direct from Herne Hill Society Publications, PO Box 27845, London SE24 9XA. The book costs £5.50 including postage and packing, and all proceeds go to Milkwood Residents' Association. Cheques should be made payable to 'The Herne Hill Society'.
