Older people seated; one man turning to another and talking

A new exhibition about life in Leyton and Leytonstone opened last Saturday (16th January 2010).

L&Q worked with Age Exchange, the charity that ‘brings memories to life’, and with young and older residents. People who took part discovered, explored and celebrated their individual and shared memories of the area from the 1930s to the present day.

Students from a local school also interviewed older residents and put together a theatre production based on their memories.

The touring exhibition is called 'Across the Divide: Voices from the Heart of Leyton'. It includes filmed interviews with local people together with archive photographs and maps.

The Mayor of Waltham Forest, Councillor Anna Mbachu, officially opened the exhibition at the Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow on 16th January.

It will tour four more sites in Waltham Forest, including the Seddons Community Centre on the Beaumont Estate, over the next three months. It will also be shown at the Age Exchange Reminiscence Centre in Blackheath.

You can also find out more about the exhibition, and read some of the personal accounts of Leyton on the Across the Divide website.
