What do my service charges pay for?

If you live in a property that shares facilities (such as a block of flats or a sheltered scheme), you’ll more than likely be paying a service charge.

Your service charge covers the costs of looking after the shared areas and facilities. If you pay a service charge, we’ll send you a separate statement showing you what’s included in the charge. Depending on where you live, your service charge could cover things like:

  • Management fee
  • Caretaking costs
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Cleaning to shared areas
  • Lighting of shared areas
  • Bin hire
  • Fire safety equipment
  • Communal TV aerial maintenance
  • Lift maintenance
  • Door entry systems
  • Depreciation (the money put aside for long term replacement of things like lifts or decorations to shared areas).
