Thrifty Mavis gets a pleasant surprise!

Mavis Frimpong is one of the L&Q residents who like to pay a bit extra on their rent every month, to keep themselves well in credit. Mavis, who lives in Bermondsey, South East London, with her husband and two teenage daughters, says: “I don’t like being in debt so if I’ve got the money I’ll buy something, but if I don’t then I won’t. I’m not someone who spends money I haven’t got but if I can put away a bit extra for a rainy day I will.
"It’s the same with the rent. I like to know I’m always covered and won’t be short in the future, so I always pay a little bit extra.”

Mavis, a health care worker at St Thomas’ Hospital in South London, splits the family’s weekly costs with her husband – he pays for the bills and the food, and she pays for their rent and the family’s clothes. She says that putting an extra bit away on their rent every month helps them budget for a holiday every year.

Her good planning has also been rewarded by L&Q. A few months ago she came home to a welcome surprise in her letter box.

“I’d just got back from work and I opened a letter to say that I’d won the L&Q prize draw for staying in credit with my rent. I didn’t believe it, I was so shocked. I called L&Q and the man on the phone said I’d won £250 for staying in credit over six months!”

Every month we put all the residents who have stayed in credit for either two or six months into a prize draw. If you meet your tenancy conditions for two months you could win one of three £150 prizes and if you meet the conditions for six months you could win one of our two £500 prizes or one of four £250 runners-up prizes.

The reward scheme has proved successful in reducing rent arrears and encouraging residents to stay in credit and we are currently rolling it out to cover the whole L&Q Group.
