Over 600 school pupils from Greenwich and Bexley tried their hands at construction and met prospective future employers at a careers fair recently.
Thirty construction businesses from the Greenwich area were at the Careers In Action construction event organised by L&Q and Greenwich Education Business Partnership. Many had arranged ‘hands-on’ activities for the 14- and 15-year-olds.
The event aimed to raise teenagers’ awareness of the wide range of careers in the construction industry. They met representatives of firms ranging from architects to builders, from painters and decorators to chartered surveyors, and from carpenters to the Army.
Mary Rouse, L&Q Neighbourhood Investment Co-ordinator, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for 14- and 15-year-olds to find out what careers are out there in the construction sector and to get a chance to try things out for themselves.
“In particular, it was good for the girls to see some positive female role models in what was traditionally a male-dominated industry. We would like say a very big thank you to our contractors and facilitators who gave their time, skills and resources for free to make this event possible.”

This was the third year of the Careers In Action construction event, which took place from 22 to 24 May at Greenwich Heritage Centre in Woolwich.
